Fete 2023 And Village Sign Unveiling

On Saturday 29th July 2023 Geldeston held its annual village fete. It was decided before the event, by the Village Hall Committee to donate the net proceeds to a charity called “MIND” which is there to help people with Mental illness .

Also at the opening of the Fete we unveiled a new village sign which the Village hall Trustees commissioned funded by part of a legacy from Mrs Monica Hilda Chidley. Monica used to live in the village along with her family and husband. She used and enjoyed the hall as part of the community life for many years. Our grand hall being 100 years old this year we felt it was a fitting memory to her to install a new sign so the village not only has a great hall but also a focal point on our village green.

Charles Colville did an excellent job of opening our Fete on behalf of his late mother Lady Elizabeth Colville who also enjoyed many years of residency in the village. The new village sign, (in the same design as the old one), was carved by Tom Jones “Beneath the Bark” and painted by Dave Barber and admired by all. Its depicts Waveney village life by the river and look closely you will see lots of little additions!! This replaces a sign that was given by the “WI” in 1972 and has since dilapidated over the years.
Its now with “Three Rivers” campsite who are going to give it a quiet retirement on the site.
Village signs, especially in Norfolk, are great bits of historic additions to our village
and now ours is there in its shinning glory for all to see.

After the unveiling the Fete took pride of place and what a great community Fete it was. Lots of people attended to enjoy the good old fashion games, Tombola, eating home made cakes, hot dogs etc. Good fun, lots of laughter meeting old and new friends.

The Chairperson would like to say a huge thank you to all those that volunteered their time to help to put this event together. A great community coming together to help others and from that event we have donated a grand total of £1500 to “MIND”.
Brilliant achievement.

Below you will see some wonderful memories of the day.
Feel free to send any of your own in you would like to have added here.
